August is an exciting month for me. It is the final stretch until fall comes (at least to my household). Though the weather in California doesn’t change in August, something does within me. I start to long for chilly days, foggy nights, pumpkin spice, and warmly colored leaves lining the sidewalks. I become impatient with the hot California days, and I fill my home with pumpkins, candles, and everything autumnal. I started to read autumnal books and get excited for the school season to start. This August has been different for me though.
I don’t have the start of school to look forward to, and I just recently started a new job. I am slowly adapting to the changes and new responsibilities and so I have written less, and I have read less. Though much has changed in my life in the span of a month, one thing hasn’t changed, and that is my love and excitement for the fall season. So, looking back at August as we are now at the end and autumnal celebrations are in full swing in my household, I am recapping what this month held for me.
Books I Finished This Month
- “We’ll Always Have Summer” by Jenny Han
This is probably my favorite book out of the series. I loved the first one because it had all the summer vibes that I needed, but this one I feel was the most intriguing. It was interesting to see how she chose to wrap up everyone’s story lines and, while I found it a little predictable, it was still enjoyable and an interesting read.
- “The Selection” by Kiera Class
This was also a fun read. Definitely a change of pace with what I’m usually used to, but I think it’s similar to how I felt reading “The Summer I Turned Pretty” trilogy. I love princess/dystopian vibes and while I wasn’t too fond of the bachelor feel, it was a fun read.
Currently Reading
- Truly Madly Sheeply by Heather Vogel Fredrick
I have transitioned into reading autumnal books, so far, I am not too far into it, but it’s pretty wholesome. This is the books description I found on the Barnes and Nobles website:
“It’s autumn in New England and Truly and her fellow Pumpkin Falls Private Eyes are gearing up for the annual Halloween Festival. Aunt True and her new husband, Rusty, have bought Ethel and Elmer Farnsworth’s dilapidated old farm on the edge of town, where they’re going to raise sheep and where Truly and her grandparents have volunteered to farm- and sheep-sit while the newlyweds are on their honeymoon. But as always, there are mysteries and secrets afoot in Pumpkin Falls. Jack-o’-lanterns outside the shops downtown are going missing—in broad daylight! Plus, someone...or something...is trying to scare Truly’s aunt and uncle away from their new property with some seriously spooky hauntings. With the arrival of Emilio, a new heartthrob student from Italy, and with Calhoun most definitely still in the picture, Truly has her hands full and will need all of her Private Eyes to help her solve the small town shenanigans this fall season.”
- “The Four Loves” by C.S. Lewis
I talked about this in my last monthly recap but it’s definitely more of a thoughtful read so I am taking my time with it. I've been reading it at night after I read the Bible.
