Author Spotlight: Jenny Han

Updated: Aug 18, 2023

Born on September 3, 1980, in Richmond, Virginia, USA, Jenny Han is a young adult fiction author who draws inspiration from her Korean-American heritage. She studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in English and later, she attended the New School in New York where she earned an MFA in Writing for Children.

This is an author well known by many, especially within the past few years (I believe) but I personally had never read any of her work before. The reason for this is that I don't tend to dip into the young adult fiction genre as much as I used to anymore, so this was all new to me.

Han’s stories largely focus on love, family dynamics, friendship, and self-discovery. Many of her books explore the experiences of teenage girls navigating the complexities of relationships and the challenges of growing up which resonate with a lot of young readers.

She has had many of her books adapted into film and television. Movies based on her "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" trilogy, were quite popular and “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series was adapted into a television show. She is also known for her collaboration with author Siobhan Vivian on the "Burn for Burn" trilogy, comprising "Burn for Burn" (2012), "Fire with Fire" (2013), and "Ashes to Ashes" (2014). This series delves into themes of revenge, friendship, and redemption.

Han's writing has been praised for its authenticity, heartfelt emotions, and relatable characters. She has gained a massive following and critical acclaim, and her books have been translated into multiple languages and, as I said before, adapted into film and television.
