Monthly Recap: July

Ah July, the month that feels the most like summer to me. My July was filled with many fun seasonal activities; playing pickle ball, barbeques, fireworks, iced coffee runs, summer drives. and lots and lots of swimming and summer reading. I unexpectedly added a couple books to my TBR this month and in turn got ahead of my reading schedule. Now coming to the month of August which always looks and feels very different to me than July, here is a wrap up of the month I had below. (To read my monthly wrap-up of June click here).

Books I Finished This Month

  • Atomic Habits by James Clear (see my review here)

If I were to make a list of books that were worth the hype this would be on that list. I honestly thought it would be like any other self-help book I had read on habits, but I personally thought it was brilliant and brought something different to the table than other books perviously had (it didn’t take me very long to read either).

  • “The Summer I Turned Pretty” by Jenny Han

This was the perfect summer book. When the middle of July rolls around I am usually pining after fall, and I struggle to enjoy the last bits of the summer season. This book I believe helped me stay in a summer mindset and anyone who’s read it will understand. I liked that it was a fairly easy read as it was a nice change of pace from what I had been reading. I read it in two days and the only problem is now all I can think about is going to the beach!

  • “It’s Not Summer Without You” by Jenny Han

This is the second book of the “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series and, while it is still summery, it does not feel very much like it due to the focus of the story. It was sad but still a good read. This one took me three days because I felt down at times while reading it.

Currently Reading

  • “We’ll Always Have Summer” by Jenny Han

This is the final installment of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series and, though I only just started reading it (so I can’t say much), I’m looking forward to seeing how Han ties everything together. By far the first one feels the most like summer to me so that’s my favorite one so far.

  • “The Four Loves” by C.S. Lewis

I also just started reading this but already it is so good. I have read his work before, and yet I am reminded every time how much I love his writing. This book in specific essentially breaks down the different kinds of love: Affection (storge) Friendship (philia) Romantic (eros) Charity (agape). I would highly recommend this or really any of his works.
