Book Review: Sinister Spring

Overview

For the final book review this Spring, I'm excited to say it is on the book "Sinister Spring" by the infamous Agatha Christie! I tend to read her books during the Fall or Winter, so I was thrilled to see a Spring themed book of mysteries! To start, the description given on Goodreads is just brilliant. "Blossoming flowers and countryside strolls may sound innocent enough, but not when there's murder in the air. Beware of secluded cottages, stolen treasure, and fatal revenge schemes. This compendium of short stories, some featuring beloved detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, is an essential omnibus for Christie fans and the perfect gift for mystery lovers" (Goodreads). This is the perfect book for anyone who loves Spring or enjoys the cottage-core aesthetic along with mysteries.

Set in the English countryside during the Springtime, all seems right with the world. Everything appears to be peaceful and perfect, but appearances can be deceiving. Behind the scenes are secrets, lies, and murders. Christie's mystery writing skills are evident in this book. She uses misdirection and red herrings to distract and confuse readers, making solving the mysteries more challenging. Stories that are included in this book are:

The Market Basing Mystery The Case of the Missing Lady The Herb of Death How Does Your Garden Grow? Swan Song Miss Marple Tells a Story Have You Got Everything You Want? The Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan Ingots of Gold The Soul of the Croupier The Girl in the Train Greenshaw's Folly

My Opinion and Rating

While I appreciate her writing, this wasn't necessarily what I expected. I think that what I enjoy about mysteries (and mysteries in general) are the many twists and turns in one story. I would like it to take me a long time (until you finish the book) to have all the answers. I believe that's why I wasn't as satisfied with this as I was with her others. I enjoyed the variety, and I still think her overall mystery-writing skills are impeccable. Still, because I didn't have much of a goal (finish the book, get the answers) as they were short stories, I didn't enjoy them as much or feel as satisfied. It also took me much longer to finish comparing it to when I read, "And Then There Were None." Overall, I would give it a rating of 3 out of 5 stars though I know it is very subjective.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.
