Book Review: Anne of Green Gables

Though my love of reading started as a child, I never read the famous "Anne of Green Gables" series by L.M. Montgomery. I've always been drawn more to mystery, fantasy, and dystopian, so I think that is one thing that deterred me from reading this series. I knew, however, that I needed to begin reading them, so this past month, that's what I did! Not only is this book perfect for Springtime, it was also refreshing to read something different for a change.

For those who may not know what the story is about, it is heartwarming tale of a little orphan girl who, by accident, is sent to stay with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a brother and sister who live on Prince Edward Island. Matthew and Marilla had agreed to adopt a boy to help around the farm. Instead, somehow the orphanage sent them a unique, very talkative eleven-year-old girl-- Anne Shirley. Even though this wasn't the original plan, Marilla and Matthew quickly fostered a softness for Anne and chose to keep her. This story follows her as she grows up, makes mistakes, builds friendships, and touches the lives of those around her.

I see myself in Anne. Not only in my younger self but in who I am today. She makes countless mistakes, never stops talking, and somehow seems to enjoy her imagination more than reality. There was also something special about reading this for the first time as an adult. I think I needed this with how heavy and dark the world is. To see the world through the eyes of a child!

L.M. Montgomery truly created a beautiful world with beautiful characters. No one was unrealistically perfect; they were simply human. I also think Montgomery does a splendid job in her writing of painting vivid pictures in each scene. Lastly, I enjoyed how each chapter was written as a new adventure and aspect of Anne and her childhood that I got to learn about and experience.

So, for this book review, I give it five stars. The plot and characters were well developed and the story in and of itself was heartwarming and touching. I would strongly encourage everyone who hasn't read "Anne of Green Gables" to do so. It was absolutely worth it, and I am already almost on the third one!
